The dos and don'ts of using AI on your website

AI has many potential uses when designing and maintaining a website. It can be used to operate chatbots, to write web copy, to create images, to design the layout of your website and to send account members personalised messages and emails.

There are many benefits of incorporating AI into your website. It can help you to save time, save money, boost professionalism and generate more leads. However, it’s important that you use AI correctly – otherwise it could backfire and lead to a website that reduces trust and loses you customers. To help you incorporate AI into your website successfully, here are a few important dos and don’ts.

DO choose a reputable chatbot

Many modern chatbots are able to carry conversations with visitors just like a human, and can be a great alternative to hiring a human virtual assistant. However, the quality does depend on the type of AI model you use. You should be wary of installing cheap chatbots using AI models you’re not familiar with – they may be more likely to malfunction and come out with undesirable responses. ChatGPT is currently regarded as one of the best AI models – consider finding the best chatbot app for ChatGPT if you want an AI model you can trust.

DON’T post AI copy without proofreading

AI can be used to write blog posts, product descriptions, FAQ answers and all kinds of other website copy. This can save you a lot of time, however, it’s essential that you proofread what AI has written for you before you publish it on your site. AI models have been known to provide inaccurate information and occasionally make grammatical errors. Fact-check all copy before posting it and make sure that it reads naturally. Often it’s worth tweaking AI content beforehand to make it feel more unique and human, since AI models do have a tendency to write things in a certain way.

DO be transparent about AI usage

It’s important to be transparent about AI usage. Do not try to pass off AI images as real photos of you or your company premises. Similarly, do not claim that an AI chatbot is a human sales rep. Those who are able to easily detect AI usage will feel deceived if you make false claims about using AI, which could harm your reputation.

DON’T use poor-quality AI images

Modern AI image generators can create very convincing images. But, depending on what model and prompts you use, some generators can still produce results that aren’t so high quality – such as hands with extra fingers and signs containing nonsensical text. These poor-quality AI images could bring down the overall quality of your website and deter customers.

DO use AI for inspiration

AI is a great tool for inspiring you with content ideas or template options. Taking this inspiration and then manually implementing these ideas can help to keep your website feeling human – allowing you to still use your own tone of voice or provide small custom touches to the layout that make your website unique.

DON’T rely wholly on AI

You can build and maintain a website almost entirely using AI, but it likely won’t look or feel very engaging. AI has its limitations and it’s important that you’re still giving your website a human touch. You could also find that too much AI results in your website being negatively ranked.
